Advance Decision

You can now record an advance decision so as to refuse specific treatments should the time come when you are no longer able to express your wishes.

To be valid, they need to satisfy various conditions. Advance requests for treatment can also be made and will have to be considered when the time comes, as part of considering what is in your best interests. This is a new area of law (Mental Capacity Act 2005) and you will find a lot of information and guidance on the official website of the Public Guardianship Office, www.publicguardian.gov.uk.

As with Lasting Powers of Attorney, I am happy to take an advisory role in commenting on what you have drawn up yourself after you have read up on the subject or, if you want to talk through your wishes with me and then leave it to me to put those into a format which has the best possible chance of succeeding, I can do that too.
